We understand that choosing the right hockey program for your young athlete can be overwhelming.
The fact is there are so many important factors to consider and such a wide range of existing programs out there - parents often feel they don't have all of the necessary information to make the best choice. Sometimes it’s difficult to know where to even begin seeking proper guidance.
These are all key reasons we began this initiative, to ensure that all hockey families, wether new to the sport, new to a particular region or rink facility, or simply seeking a fresh approach, have a place to turn.
With this idea in mind, we present you with…
When it comes to any hockey program, wether it's a clinic, a house league, travel team or a seasonal training camp, you’ll want to be sure the COACHES are the BEST at what they do!
Be sure to inquire about training certifications and years of experience when it comes to selecting the right instructor for your hockey player.
As the saying goes, you absolutely do get what you pay for and hockey is no different!
There is NO substitution for qualified, experienced, committed and caring coaches.
Now that you know who your coaches are the next question you’ll want to ask is: “What is the program curriculum?”
What is the program structure?
What will your player be learning while they are enrolled in the program?
What is the coach to player ratio - “class size” could easily be a “C” of its own!
Are there readily accessible practice plans that the program administrator can share with you?
Also, what are your specific goals for your player and how do these align with those of the program?
These are all essential questions to ask when choosing the right program.
Once you know your coaches and you understand the curriculum, it’s easier to see the program’s COMMITMENT - our 3rd “C” is a reflection of what the program’s particular vision is for your athlete.
Is there a long-term plan established for my child’s continued growth and development?
Is there an emphasis around building a COMMUNITY to grow together on this path?
This naturally brings us to our 4th “C”… Community. The scope of community may vary depending on your definition, but when it comes to hockey… COMMUNITY is key!
Is there a sense of community being established by the organization that is behind the program?
What are the conveyed values for the program’s community?
Do I know other families involved in the program?
Are the other players at the same age/skill level as my player?
This particular aspect of a hockey program is a very personal one and it’s important that you make the proper consideration as you would for any type of activity involving people coming together around a common interest.
In building community, one of the most essential elements is communication! With communication comes several additional considerations such as frequency, clarity and focus of the communication you receive...
How often do you hear from the organization?
How transparent is the communication you receive?
Do you feel you are being dealt with openly and fairly?
How accessible are the decision-makers of the organization?
Are they available to answer your questions as you need them?
These are some important questions you might want to ask when choosing a program to align with regardless of the extent of the commitment you plan on making.
These 5C’s apply regardless of the season, duration or location of the program you are considering
